The Common Grass Yellow exhibits seasonal polyphenism. The lepidopteran has a darker summer morph, triggered by a long day exceeding 13 hours in duration, while the shorter diurnal period of 12 hours or less induces a fairer morph in the post-monsoon period.

Males are mainly white on the upperside, with a large orange patch on the forewings.Females are more intensely yellow on the upperside, with developed black spots. Underside is streaked brown, which resembles a dead leaf.
Indian Fritillary -

It flies fast but tends to settle frequently, especially for the male butterflies during their patrolling routine at hilltops. The female mimics the poisonous Plain Tiger (Danaus chrysippus). There is a white band at the back apex of each forewing. The male is often found guarding its territory or chasing off other butterflies at hilltops. The female occurs mostly in lowlands where it looks for suitable places to lay eggs.
Club ends of antennae are rounded. Males are similar to Phalanta phalantha in appearance, only larger, and underside is marked by irregular white, black and brown specks.

Red spots on the hindwings look like two red lights among a splattering of white spots. They have a very exciting flight and you can hear the wings flapping up to 15 feet away. You can only find them in dense forest, usually feeding on the sap which oozes from the tree bark.

The Common Emigrant or Lemon Emigrant (Catopsilia pomona) is a medium sized pierid butterfly found in Asia and parts of Australia. The species gets its name from its habit of migration. Some early authors considered them as two distinct species Catopsilia crocale and Catopsilia pomona.
Interesting aspects:  Occurs as pale and dark forms, which differ mainly in that the dark forms are more yellow and in the females the width of the black colour along the wing margins is better developed, and there is sometimes a dark purple central blotch in the hindwing beneath in the pale female form.  The chief distinguishing feature is that the dark forms have black antennae while the pale forms have pink antennae.  Both forms fly together and are produced from the same batch of eggs.  Breeding studies suggest that higher temperatures and longer day length may promote the dark form.  Genetic dominance studies have not been undertaken.

The butterfly is tailless and has a wingspan 80–100 mm. Above, the background colour is black. A broad, irregular yellow band is found on the wings above, which is broken in the case of the forewing. Besides this the butterfly has a large number of irregular spots on the wing. The upper hindwing has a red tornal spot with blue edging around it.
As the butterfly ages, the yellow markings on the wings deepen to orange.
