This is the prettiest of the Pansies. In the male, the forewing is black with a pale white patch near the apex. The hindwing is a beautiful bright blue with an orange red eye-spot. The female is duller with very little or no blue coloring but has two larger orange-red eye-spots on the hindwing. The blue Pansy is fairly common and in any patch of grassland, a few of such butterflies can often be found. Even right in the heart of town, where vacant building sites are awaiting development, this butterfly is sure to be present. The female seems to be less common.

However, the male, which seems to be more abundant, may be seen congregating at moist spots along forest paths or edge of streams.

in the subfamily Pseudergolinae. Several geographical forms with variations in the colour are noted within the wide distribution range extending from India in the West to Japan in the East. In Vietnam, it is thought to show hill topping behaviour and is typically found in dense forest habitats.[3] [4] They may also be found mud puddling with other species.
The butterfly is very dark and marmorate with white sinuous line and spots.
